Modern Treasure Hunters
Justin an avid Treasure Hunter is always looking for freshly turned over mounds of soil. Many times while driving from place to place his family will hear...”Turn around! Turn around! I just saw some glass in that vacant site. Many buildings dating into the 1800’s are being demolished to erect new establishments within the cities.
Justin’s last find was in the town of Dundas, Ontario. The building dating back to the 1800s was once used as a grocery store, photography studio and last a sub shop . The sub shop was demolished and the land stood vacant for several months.
"I started poking around on the surface. Shards of glass, china and pipe stems popped up everywhere.” Justin told me.
He kept his eyes on the site watching for the diggers to roll in and start tearing up the ground. "It was very exciting. Each night I would walk the site pulling up pipes, bottles, marbles, hairpins, bone tooth brushes and coins." Four coins were pulled out of the Dundas site an 1850 Bank Token One Penny, 1863 Penny, 1916 Dime, and a 1835 silver 6th pence.
The site is now being built on and Justin is looking for a new site that might have some hidden history.
I am going to follow Justin until the first snow hits. Photograph and write about his finds. He is a true treasure hunter bringing history out of the earth before the concrete seals it in forever.
Justin has always had a knack of finding trinkets on the ground. He would ask me how I don’t see these great finds. I would always tell him it was because he was closer to the ground then me. Now he is approaching 6ft still asking me the same question, my answer to him is that he is the gifted one that has a amazing future as a Treasure Hunter. Never forget your amazing teacher and partner in crime, Mark, his dad who also grew up hunting at a young age. It’s never a dull moment on our road trips!
