Welcome to the Platterhouse Ocean Retreat

travel peibeach2Located on the Northeastern shore of Prince Edward Island, Canada, and surrounded by the waters of the Northumberland Strait, Platterhouse Retreat is a virtually undiscovered haven with several breathtaking, private beaches. We are only 25 minutes from 3 Championship Golf Courses, and just stroll down the shore for world-class oysters and lobster...

Vacations can be a bit nerve wracking for the planner of the vacation. There are a lot of things to worry about. Making the planes on time, getting to the hotels before you lose your check-in, a lot of ifs and unknowns happen with vacations. Sometimes you are more tired when you get back from a vacation than before you even started the vacation. It can be far worse if you are planning a large group vacation. If you have seen the Home Alone movies, then you know it can be tricky (even without a kid who has a penchant for being left home alone/lost in New York). This is where the Platterhouse Ocean Retreat in eastern PEI comes in.

The Platterhouse Ocean Retreat was a former restaurant that was bought six years ago by Tracy Saarloos. The restaurant was known as the “Old Platterhouse” hence the name of the retreat. They have not just kept the name of the restaurant, though. As it is essentially a very large house that is capable of housing up to 27 guests in its five bedrooms and three and a half baths, there is a need for a communal kitchen. It is not just a regular kitchen in a house; it is the original kitchen that was used in the restaurant, but with a few modifications for the benefit of the guests. Those modifications include two stove tops for a total of twelve stove tops, a grill, a griddle and much more. This means that the guests are free to cook when they like and not have to bump into each other in a small kitchen. This is a terrific segue into something else about the kitchen: food. The kitchen comes equipped with gourmet coffee makers, which is great especially when you have gourmet teas from PEI Preserves. All of the food is from the island which is great for those who want to be green while also supporting local industries. Say you do not want to cook for your entire group, though, or maybe it is a wedding party. That is not a problem since a caterer can be brought in for the food or one of the many talented chefs that are from the island. With all of this talk of food, you are probably going to want to work it off.

What you can do at The Platterhouse

At night, you can watch fireworks from the wrap around deck

So, what does the Platterhouse Ocean Retreat offer in ways of keeping busy? Short answer: pretty much everything. At the Platterhouse Ocean Retreat they are all about being a specialization retreat. That is, they are all about helping the clients’ wants and needs. There are no itineraries, everything is customizable. When you book your stay, you can pick from various packages and bring in additional add-ons to those packages. Some of the packages are the family package, women’s retreat and golf package. With the family package you can go soft shell clamming and learn how to properly go clamming. Afterwards, the clams you have collected are steamed at a bonfire. The women’s retreat package includes being taken to a secluded beach followed by massages. Those who go for the golf package will not be disappointed with being taken to the three championship golf courses on PEI. This is not all they have to offer, though. Anything that you can think of doing in PEI, they will help to make a reality. There are plenty of hiking trails as well as biking trails. You can go on a boat tour or even fish from one of the boats that come to their dock daily. They offer lighthouse tours, oyster tours, and if you want to see the rest of PEI or go into a specific city or town and do not have a car, transportation can be arranged. At night, you can watch fireworks from the wrap around deck that overlooks the ocean. This retreat is something different from the rest of PEI.

Currently, the Platterhouse Ocean Retreat is open during the spring, summer and fall, but they are working to open for the winter as well to take in the fun of PEI in the winter. Any group can book the retreat and prices vary because of how customizable it all is.
